A Historic Gem Awaits on Wellesley Island
1000 Island Hart House is far more than just another bed and breakfast. Situated on Wellesley Island in the heart of the Thousand Islands, this boutique inn combines rich history, elegant accommodations, and warm hospitality in a way that captivates visitors from the moment they arrive. Whether you’re seeking a romantic retreat, a peaceful escape, or a base for adventure in the 1000 Islands region, Hart House offers an unforgettable experience steeped in local heritage.
A Story Spanning Over 150 Years
The Hart House story begins in 1872, when it was built by Elizer K. Hart on Heart Island. Most importantly, in 1892, George Boldt—the visionary behind the iconic Boldt Castle—purchased the property and had it moved across the frozen St. Lawrence River to Wellesley Island. Because of this remarkable relocation, the cottage became part of Boldt’s exclusive Thousand Islands Club, where the incredibly wealthy enjoyed polo matches, private aviation, and luxury living. Over the decades, the property evolved through many chapters—from elegant residence to golf club house to dormitory to fine dining restaurant. In 2022, after careful restoration, Hart House reopened as a boutique bed and breakfast, honoring its storied past while embracing modern comfort.
Distinctive Rooms with Character
Hart House features eight uniquely designed rooms and suites, each named to reflect the property’s heritage. The Boldt Room offers St. Lawrence River views and a king-size pencil-post bed with whirlpool bath. The Sunset Suite sleeps up to four guests and boasts seaway sunrise views and Italian tile fireplace details. Other offerings include the Kashmir Garden Suite with private patio access, the St. Lawrence Room with garden views, and the Hart Room featuring a four-poster canopy bed and private porch. Therefore, each room combines period elegance with modern amenities—think whirlpool tubs, fireplaces, and thoughtful décor.
Breakfast and Beyond
Every morning, guests awaken to gourmet breakfast served with care while overlooking the golf course. Besides that, the location provides easy access to Wellesley Island’s abundant activities: golfing, boating, paddling, hiking, biking, and swimming. In addition, nearby attractions include Thousand Island Park, Minna Anthony Nature Center, and the charming tourist towns of Alexandria Bay and Clayton—each offering shopping, dining, and wine tasting opportunities.
The Perfect Venue for Special Events
Hart House also serves as an exceptional wedding and event venue. The bright, airy spaces—including the historic chapel with original stained glass—create memorable settings for ceremonies, receptions, and corporate retreats.
1000 Island Hart House redefines hospitality in the Thousand Islands, offering guests a chance to experience the grandeur of a bygone era while enjoying contemporary comfort and genuine warmth.
