A Historic Haven in Clayton’s Heart

Captain Simons Bed & Breakfast invites visitors to experience authentic Victorian elegance just steps away from the picturesque St. Lawrence River. This beautifully preserved 1870s home sits at the heart of Clayton, NY — perfectly positioned for exploring the enchanting Thousand Islands region. Most importantly, guests enjoy a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort that captures the essence of this iconic waterfront village.
A Story Rooted in Hospitality
The home’s roots run deep in Clayton’s history. Built in the 1870s, it was once owned by the celebrated boat builder Captain Simon G. Johnston, whose legacy remains part of the area’s maritime heritage. Today, the property stands as a featured stop on the Clayton Historical Walking Tour, honoring its architectural significance.
Current owner Bonnie Bouchard continues a family tradition of gracious hospitality that spans generations. Fifty years ago, Bonnie’s grandmother — widow Maud Bouchard — rented rooms from a home just two doors away. That pioneering spirit of welcoming guests lives on through Captain Simons, creating an atmosphere where visitors feel like cherished family members.
Victorian Elegance Meets Modern Comfort
The five-bedroom home transports guests to another era without sacrificing modern conveniences. Each room features beautifully appointed antique furnishings, many imported from Germany and France. Expect comfortable beds dressed in fine decorator linens, plush down comforters, and soft pillows. Besides that, private bathrooms showcase vintage charm — pedestal sinks, old-fashioned brass fixtures, and in one room, an antique clawfoot tub.
The home’s architecture captivates immediately. Beveled oak paneling flows through the foyer and stairway, while inlaid oak floors and hard maple upstairs demonstrate remarkable craftsmanship. A soapstone wood-burning stove adds warmth, and birdseye maple pocket doors enclose the elegant round dining room.
Personalized Service & Gourmet Breakfasts

Mornings begin with gourmet breakfasts served on Gramma’s china, silver, and crystal — a gracious touch reflecting the Bouchard family’s hospitality heritage. As a result, guests start each day nourished and energized.
Captain Simons accommodates special dietary needs and provides handicapped access, including an elevator. The smoke-free environment suits all travelers. Additionally, Bonnie happily arranges vacation plans — booking guided fishing trips, restaurant reservations, boat tours, golf tee-times, and more.
Prime Location for Exploration
Located within walking distance of restaurants, museums, boat tours, galleries, public docks, and unique shops, this bed and breakfast serves as an ideal base. Nearby golf courses and abundant attractions make it easy to experience Clayton’s best offerings.
