Flagg drew inspiration from Sir Walter Scott’s novel “Woodstock,” envisioning a structure that would echo Scottish castle architecture while showcasing American innovation and craftsmanship.

Construction began in 1903 and continued through 1905, with Italian stonemasons shaping granite quarried from nearby Oak Island. Most importantly, the castle was completed, fully furnished, and actively lived in during the height of America’s greatest industrial era—making it unique among Gilded Age structures.
