Overview
1000islands.com is a tourism information website for the Thousand Islands region. We’re committed to being straightforward about what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it. We don’t sell your information, and we don’t run advertising networks.
What Information We Collect
Business listings. Businesses can submit their contact information to be listed in our directory. This includes business name, address, phone number, and website URL. We use this information solely to display your listing on the site and keep it accurate. If you submitted a listing and want it updated or removed, contact us at support@1000islands.com.
Love messages. Our site invites visitors to submit short messages about their experiences in the Thousand Islands. When you submit a love message, we collect your name and general location (such as your city or state or country), along with the message itself. We display approved submissions publicly on the site. We do not use this information for marketing or share it with third parties.
Server logs. Like most websites, our server automatically records standard information when you visit: your IP address, browser type, pages visited, and the date and time of your visit. This data is used only for diagnosing technical problems and understanding general traffic patterns. This data is retained indefinitely. We do not link server logs to individual identities.
AI Chat Assistant. This site includes an AI-powered chat assistant to help visitors find information about the Thousand Islands region. When you use the chat, your questions are sent to Anthropic’s Claude API to generate responses. Anthropic’s Privacy Policy governs how prompts are handled on their end. Your questions and the assistant’s responses are also stored on our servers to help improve the accuracy and usefulness of the assistant. This data is retained indefinitely. We do not share conversation data with third parties or use it for advertising purposes. Do not include personal or sensitive information in your chat messages.
Cookies
WordPress, the platform this site runs on, sets a small number of cookies for basic site functionality. We do not use cookies for advertising or behavioral tracking. If you visit the site without logging in or submitting a form, the cookies in use are purely technical and do not identify you personally.
My Itinerary. The “My Itinerary” feature allows you to save and organize businesses and attractions during your visit. Your itinerary selections are stored locally in your browser using cookies or local storage. This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to our servers or shared with third parties. Clearing your browser’s cookies or local storage will remove your saved itinerary.
Visitors from outside the United States, and California residents, will see a cookie consent notice on their first visit. Dismissing the notice records your acknowledgment via a browser cookie.
Third-Party Services
Facebook. We use a Facebook Meta App to publish content (such as new business listings) to the 1000islands.com Facebook Page. This is a backend publishing tool — it does not give Facebook access to any visitor data, and visitors do not log in to our site through Facebook. If you follow or interact with our Facebook Page, Facebook’s own privacy policy governs that data.
Google Maps. Business listing pages may display an embedded map using Google Maps. Google may set its own cookies when you view a map. Google’s privacy policy governs any data collected through Maps.
Amazon Associates. This site participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program. When you click an Amazon product link and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Clicking an Amazon link will take you to Amazon.com, where Amazon’s own privacy policy and cookie practices apply. Amazon may set cookies to track purchases for affiliate commission purposes.
Other than the services listed above, we do not share your information with third parties.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to operate the site and respond to inquiries. Business contact details are displayed in our directory. Love messages are reviewed, approved, and displayed publicly on the site. Server logs are used to monitor performance and troubleshoot issues. We do not use any of this information for advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes.
Data Retention
We keep business listing information for as long as the listing is active. Love messages that are approved and published, as well as AI chat assistant conversations, remain on the site indefinitely unless you request removal.
Your Rights
You have the right to ask us what information we hold about you, to request corrections, or to ask us to delete it. Email us at support@1000islands.com and we will respond promptly.
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the CCPA, including the right to know what personal information we have collected and the right to request deletion. We do not sell personal information. To exercise any CCPA rights, contact us at support@1000islands.com.
